Behind Off the Record
Your Questions, My Answers.
When I first started writing Off the Record, I had no idea how much it would take over my brain, my heart, and most of my spare time. What began as a simple “what if” turned into a full-blown love story about truth, vulnerability, and the bits of ourselves we hide when the lights are on.
Since the release, I’ve had a few messages from people saying things like “I wanted to ask about…” or “Was that scene based on…” — but then they say they were too shy to actually send it.
So here’s your chance.
If you’ve read Off the Record and have any questions at all, about the story, the characters, my writing process, where the idea came from, or what might come next, ask away. Nothing’s off limits (well, almost nothing).
You can reply right here in the comments, or if you’d rather stay anonymous, you can message me on any of the Foxes Afloat social accounts, where you can drop your question privately.
I’ll be answering as many as I can in an upcoming YouTube video, and maybe even in a podcast episode, so your question might make it into both.
No question is too small, too strange, or too personal. If you wondered about it while reading, chances are someone else did too.
Thanks for reading, for asking, and for helping keep the conversation going, it’s one of the best parts of this whole writing thing.

HI
I have written a draft book a few years ago and had a editor look at it (at a great cost) who has helped with my punctuation amongst other things but i still have one major problem. She says i need to give my characters a back story. When writing the book i tried to keep it simple and did not have to many characters and i only had small details about their past. The editor said i need to add a bigger back story to make them more believable. My problem is i am stuck what story to give them and how i can fit it in with what i have already written, how do i slot it into a book i have already finished, i feel it would change the whole story they have. Because of this it has lay in drawer for the past 5 years and i feel it is such a waste as i have spent a lot of time (and money) writing it. Sorry if i have rambled (could be another problem i have LOL). cheers Michaela
Were you involved in the London theatre scene at any point? Also, when writing the story, did the characters pop into your head in all hours of the day and night? Are you writing more of their story?
